iNet: Local Network scanning for the Mac Made Easy

There's a lot that I like about my Eero router and it's accompanying mobile software, but one thing I feel is missing is a suitable macOS network scanning client. More often than not, I want to check my network from the comfort of my Mac mini instead of going on my iPhone. Sure, I can resort to command line witchcraft, but it doesn't give me a clean and descriptive picture. Some research into network scanning tools yielded several options. Based on favorable reviews, I purchased iNet.

INet - One of the best network scanner for Mac and iOS devices. Developed and refined since 2009. INet - explore your network! Find out about security risks and keep your network under control. This easy to use App outlines a computer network even to the unexperienced user. This utility allows you to scan documents into Neat or save them to your local computer (PC/Mac) from a Neat-branded scanner or any TWAIN-compliant scanning device. If you have an existing Neat software subscription, simply login using your Neat credentials and select 'Scan to Neat' as your destination. If you do not have an active Neat subscription, you can scan your documents directly to your computer-no. INet Network Scanner – explore your network! INet provides you with information about networks and devices your Mac is connected to. INet tools is the app for all Internet Geek to help you check stuff on the Internet, like html source viewer, DNS resolving and simple telnet client to check for specific open ports, and a full port scanner. This is the first tool to use for network diagnostics. In the current release of iNet we implemented the following features:. Network scan. Ping. Bonjour browser. Portscan. Device info. Wake on Lan. Sleep on Lan (Macintosh only). Extensive help section. Send scan results via email Scan Network: iNet shows the devices connected to your local network, e. A computer or router, along with their name, IP and vendor. INet discovers and distinguishes between windows and macintosh computers with different icons.

iNet Network Scanner, by Banana Glue, allows users to quickly scan all the devices on their local area network (LAN). In addition to reporting your networked devices, iNet also lets users wake certain devices up from sleep and (if properly configured) VNC into other machines on their LAN. This is super useful for me as I have a Linux machine in a different room that requires occasional access.

What I like best about iNet is how easy it is to parse the information. At a glance, I can see each of the devices, their IP address and their MAC address. Each device on iNet can be customized with an image, to make glancing through the scan very intuitive. iNet comes with several images you can use by default, or you can always drag and drop custom images that you prefer. Now if I need to VNC or SSH to a machine or ssh into my LinuxBox, I can quickly use iNet and take care of business. You can even put remote Macs to sleep or reboot them from within iNet.

The only feature within iNet that I don't use is Airport Watch, because I no longer have an AirPort Extreme router. I wish there was an option for managing other routers, like Eero. More pressing for me, though, is the option to have iNet as a menu bar item, so that I can quickly see what's on my network without having to launch the app.

iNet retails for $24US on the Mac App Store and, in my opinion, is well worth it if you want to keep track of multiple devices on your home network. The price includes life-time updates. For network scanning via your iPad or iPhone, Banana Glue also sells an iOS version of its app for about $9US. Users can download and test iNet for iOS for free.

With iNet you know exactly what's going on! This easy to use App outlines a computer network even to the unexperienced user. And iNet never phones home, your data is absolutely private on your Android phone.

iNet provides you with information about networks your Android phone or iPod touch is connected to. Its very easy and user friendly design even allows the unexperienced user to get a profound and understandable overview of a network and the running services.

In the current release of iNet we implemented the following features:

• Network scan
• Ping
• Bonjour browser
• Portscan
• Device info
• Wake on Lan
• Sleep on Lan (Macintosh only)
• Extensive help section
• Send scan results via email

Inet App

Scan Network:
iNet shows the devices connected to your local network, e. g. a computer or router, along with their name, IP and vendor. iNet discovers and distinguishes between windows and macintosh computers with different icons. For most google Computers the particular computer model can be seen. Find out the name, vendor and IP of the connected devices as well as the number of running Bonjour services on that particular device. (MAC and Vendor cannot be detected anymore since android 11) A classic portscan on the choosen device can also be performed.

Inet Scanner

The technology used in iNet scans on a very low level, therefore one can even find machines that don't want to be found, for instance a Mac OS X computer running in stealth mode.

Ping: (Pro)
Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network or not. The ping section in iNet enables you to find out if an IP exists (if its ping service is enabled; otherwise you will get no response :-)). For your convenience we added a bookmark function to store often needed addresses.

Bonjour browser: (Pro)
Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers. The Bonjour-Browser in iNet scans the connected local network for Bonjour services, detecting any hardware that ist connected via the Bonjour protocol (for instance computer, router, printer, …) and any software running Bonjour services, e. g. iTunes or Filemaker.

Wake on lan: (Pro)
The outstanding feature of our implementation is that it is very easy to use and simple to setup. For more information see iNet WOL, our stand-alone tool for WOL.

Portscan: (Pro)
Applications on devices communicate with the outside world through so called TCP ports. iNet detects wether a port is open or closed. For all detected open ports the service using this port is displayed by its real name (if available).

Device Info: (Pro)
The device info in iNet shows some information related to your Android phone or iPod touch, e. g. its name or its IP.

The modularisized structure of iNet allows to add more features and scanning methods in the future. We will implement by time more network monitoring tools, e. g. DNS-Querys, Traceroute, Whois lookup etc.. iNet Pro will be updated on a regular basis as before. In addition we released iNet for Mac in December 2010 – available via the App Store.

If you want to know what's going on in your local network – iNet Networks Scanner gives you a profound answer.
